Matthew hits up with a Bronze....
So far after landing in Korea and ahead 12 hours in sleep time, Matthew has begun his training where ever the team is allowed to train. It seems as though one training occurred in the basement of the hotel, where they were staying at. Desperate times is meant for desperate measures, and the team is commited. The team has already has their warm up competition and Matthew ended up with a bronze. Although its a warm up, we are still rooting for the gold for the Korean Open. We'll see what happens as he continues to update us from Korea.
Local Student Earns 1st Place Win at National Taekwondo Event
Shaina Krause took home honor at event Sunday in San Jose, Calif.

George Mason University student Shaina Krause of Fairfax Station won first place Sunday in the Featherweight Black Belt Division at the 2011 USA Taekwondo Senior Nationals competition held in San Jose, Calif.
Krause, who perfects her taekwondo skills at Phan University of Martial Arts in Burke, was among more than 3,100 athletes who took part in the competition.
The win qualifies Krause, a 2010 graduate of South County Secondary, for a $1,000 scholarship, to be used toward participation in any Taekwondo Open International Tournament approved by USA Taekwondo (USAT).
Krause has competed for more than 10 years at nationals and placed on nationals teams since she was 14. She won gold at the junior level several times. She has competed at both the junior level and senior level simultaneously.
In her four years competing at the senior level, this is her first time winning gold.
“It feels really good to win and bring a good name to my sponsor, Mooto," she said. "I was on the collegiate team at training camp a week prior to nationals, which helped a lot with stamina to work towards the gold.”
Krause recently suffered the tragic loss of her father, Paul Krause, a retired Army officer, in an auto accident in March involving a drunk driver who was an illegal immigrant. Before his passing, Shaina said she would call her father after every tournament and he would tell her how happy he was for her win.
“I know he’d be really proud of me and proud that I had worked hard for all of this,” said Krause, who gains support from her two sisters and mom Kwon Suk "Suki" Krause.
In the past week, Krause also qualified to compete for the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) Senior National Team by placing in the top four in her division at the AAU Taekwondo Senior Nationals held in Austin, Texas.
In addition, Krause has been put back into the running for a spot at the Olympics, after the current representative vying for the Olympic spot didn’t qualify at a recent event. This means the representative will have to compete against Krause for the spot.
“Things happen for a reason,” said Master Phan Le of his student. “With all of the challenges Shaina has faced and overcome including the huge emotional challenge of the loss of her father, she has proven with the support of her friends and her team members there is nothing that can stop her from attaining her goals.”
Athletes fairs well at both Nationals

June 28th Joshua revs to play at nationals for the first time with the eager to win. But, came short and earned himself a bronze. A performance that had a heart of a lion. That continuous spirit will one day earn him that gold. The following day in Austin, TX, our two hard players Matthew and Shaina qualifies for their spots earning themselves positions for team trials. That will be held in September, in Fort Lauderdale, FL. We internally wish them the best as they prepare for spots on the national AAU team. While in San Jose, CA, Noah falls short to a former team member and has been able to learn a valuable lesson from the event. Although, this loss was a surprise, the experience was an opportunity for a change in lifestyle. Good job Noah. Thursday, Bazy competed first round keeping it too tight for the competitor and drawing it into the golden round, and surprising her opponent by a turning jumping back kick. It was not until the next match, Bazy fell short by judges faulty points and disputable calls by the ref. Bazy learned from this and has held her own since, we are proud of her for her continued spirit to becoming that number 1 player one day. Friday's event was more intense as Matthew tried to earn a spot at the team trials. Matt also fell short of qualifying as he obtained a slight concussion from the match before, with Manila Athlete punching Matthew in the face a couple of times. Although the Manila athlete wasn't DQ'd for the actions, Matthew did score his points on head shots and body shots, pushing him into the quarterfinals. Matthew has proven that he has the ability to be a world class athlete. Saturday and Sunday's event held the senior and master's division. Starting the weekend off on Saturday's event with Dina being ousted from a gold medal earning herself a silver as calls for head shot again was debatable and dissappointing on the judges part. Although, Dina gave it all, it was a fun experience again, for her to try a continued year to earn a gold for 2012.Keep your head up Dina. Shaina went through on Sunday with the intention and fire to win. 1st round she ousted Peak Performance by a 10-1 victory and coming short of knocking the peak player out. Her second match against former National AAU team Captain Taren Ogata's player, started off slow on the first round until the tides changed in the second. Shaina was too strong for her opponent and came out with two beautiful solid head shots and 2 body shots giving herself a comfortable lead into third round. Third round was filled with counter attacks which finished with a score of 10-3. Following Match forfeited due to injury which placed Shaina into the finals against an athlete she has seen many of times, Makayla Phillips. An outstanding athlete, Phillips maintained control and movement during first round as Shaina tried to read her the entire first round. It was difficult round with no one scoring and the lead went into the 2nd round with 0-0 on the board. Plans then changed for Shaina as she executed the strategic head shot which successfully landed, as Phillips received a TKO, standing 10 count by the ref, which earned Shaina the GOLD. Good job to Makayla and coach Phillips, and A congratulations to our own team captain/player Shaina.
Matthew gets reinvited to represent team USA!!!!
Sat, 06/18/2011 - 06:07.
Matthew Zwiren gets reinvited to represent team USA at the Chuncheon Korea Open. The event will take place in July 7-19th. A well deserved honor and a beginning athlete so much to prove. Wish him well as he along with his team mates prepares for nationals and for the Korea Open.
GMU President's Cup a Blast!
Sun, 06/12/2011 - 11:21.
A very rewarding experience for all the players that were involved. Hyun Woo, Soo Eun, Samira, Karina, Jamison, Halle, Liam, Joshua, Bunyamin, Noah, Bazy, & Matthew. The tournament had ran late as usual, but the players were ready when called upon in the ring. Although many faired decently, for the others the competition, was very much a way of introducing them to what could lie ahead. Hopefully, the turnout in the near future will simply be an opportunity for our new team in August. Looking ahead for a brand new journey with solid players and always good results.
Olympic Team Trials...
A very tense atmosphere with the nation's top players qualifying for the weight divisions for the Olympic team trials. Shaina Krause of Team Mooto USA and Phan University Taekwondo Team came short of making it through competition from carrying a previous injury from the Global Open two weeks prior. Although this dream was short lived, she will be given another chance to compete for the world championships trials in January 8th & 9th. We will wish her luck as she continues to prepare for this upcoming event in less than two months. Good luck Shaina, and congratulations to the winners that made it.
Global International Taekwondo Championships of October 2010
The global international taekwondo championships of 2010 was held on October 29th & 30th in Anaheim, California. It was a trip to be reckoned with as 5 top Team MOOTO USA athletes took on competitors from various countries. All five players of Team MOOTO USA and Phan University Taekwondo Team proved to be willing to make a statement, with Bazy earning a silver, Justin a silver, Hernan a silver, Matthew a gold, and Shaina a Gold. The lack of proper working gear (LA JUST) on the day of juniors was a very, very bad result as each athlete, including players from other countries, was not able to score clean shots. Athletes were forced to wear chest gears even 2 sizes lower than what they should be using. The LaJust chest gears didn't handle well on the first day of competition. Each player was forced to change their styles since scores were not being applied properly. Doing so, LaJust pulled their equipment back and updated the software, which completely changed the next day’s event. Shaina's fight came out strong all the way to the end, with not one player from another country or individuals in her division able to score a point. Shaina brought the game to the finals, winning a gold and making a world ranking for WTF seniors in the featherweight division. It is a turning point for Krause as she prepares for the Olympic trial in less than 2 weeks. Good job Team MOOTO USA.
Team MOOTO USA Team Player Shaina Krause makes
History by qualifying for Olympic Team
Trials
An amazing opportunity lies ahead for Shaina Krause of Phan University
Taekwondo Team Member and Team MOOTO USA Team Captain. After fighting her
way to the top qualifying two positions at the Senior Nationals, Shaina
qualifies herself as one of two athletes to make it to the Olympic Team
Trials. Although a current AAU national Sr. Team member for the
Featherweight division, Shaina decided along with Team MOOTO USA Head Coach
to compete in the same division her sister Cheryl Krause qualified for at
the Collegiate Nationals. After her run down at York Qualifiers coming in
the last position in 3rd place, she decided to work closely with the coach
and take different options on her training method. That proved to work in
the end as she passed through her competitors winning her fights by
finishing 3 points ahead or more. The controversial head shots her
opponents attempted, were debatable and should of been reviewed by video
replay. It was a clear win for Shaina all the way, but given the fact of
human error, Shaina finished 2nd in the finals to win her spot on the
Olympic Team Trials. Along this privelage opportunity she has won a spot to
compete at the Pan Am Team Trials, the World Championship Team Trials, and
most importantly the Olympic Team Trials. We all here at Team MOOTO USA and
Phan University Taekwondo Team are ecstatic of this opportunity again for
the team and its member. We look forward to making this dream come true for
her and seeing her move this torch forward.

2009 Toronto International Open Taekwondo Championships
The day started off pretty well with Bazy tying for first in poomse, but resulting in a silver medal.
Breanna took control with scores grading a 9, making gold once again from last years repeat. After the poomse
the ladies came short of golds in sparring, Bazy earned a bronze and Breanna was short of a gold, walking away with a silver.
Nick Jung came into his fight suprised by matching with a rival from US Tigers team, whom he has beaten many of times,
and walked away with a 6-1 score. He was then faced off with a canadian, the match came too close as he drew a silver
from the competition. Mathew a newcomer from another team competed at his first international competition was adapting to many
new challenges, from a new coach, a new team, and of all things a higher skill format. His first fight seemed to be alot
more in control as he was simply favored overall in the match with flurries of kicks. The competition came to a still in
the finals, as his same stretegy wasn't working. He earned a silver. Dennis walked away with a repeat from last year's
performance and was simply too strategic in his match and earned respectfully a gold. Donovan's competition was simply
lost by a point to Canadian armed forces in the finals, by a silver. Greg Tamargo's earned a silver in forms, but his
gold in sparring was a huge strategy that put his Canadian player at a stand still. The new strategy and implementation
of previous worked drills accomplished alot and simply put his opponent at a rage, so that he'd walk away with a rightfully
earned gold. Danny gold forms and silver in sparring was not bad for a first time color belt at the international level.
Dina gold in forms rightfully given her a title for Toronto Open Taekwondo Color Belt Forms champion, but simply lost her
goose in sparring, earning a gold. Bill continuous focus on his poomse and late night training accomplished alot and tied
with a higher belt, that simply earned a gold for him and the team. Lastly, David earned a silver in forms. Sunday we
will be awaiting for the team captain's result. Shaina will be competing in Sr. Olympic weight division and Justin in
Jr. Olympic weight division. Wish them well
Second and last day of the event, Justin goes in controlling his match by beating Canadian armed forces jr.
Team member by 11-4. The semis was forfeited by the other opponent due to a groin pull, which put Justin in the finals.
Justin seemed to have controlled the whole match when later in the second match began to turn towards the Canadian side
as Justin was up a 10 point lead. This gave Justin a chance to repeat, but came short of his championship medal by 17-18
with two full deductions. Justin left with a silver, but with his head up high. Shaina came 10-5 controlling her opponent
in the first match, which led her into the round robin stage. Shaina first fight off was with Shannon Condie, 8x
Canadian national team member and lost with a frustrated fight of 3-13. That fight was a huge eye opener
as she had to reset her game plan, as the coach simply scolded her for not playing the game according to his strategy.
Her second match up was against her sister's rival and US Collegiate team member Aziza Chambers. The fight seemed to be
a lot of feints and stalls, but in the end Shaina won the match with 7-4. Because of a controversy over first place
and 3 players tying at the end, Shannon bowed out as the face off for 1st place was again between Shaina and Aziza. The two US Team
coach agreed without furthering the competition to a later evening, that the golden score would be accepted into the finals.
With out hesitation, the players agreed as well. The first round was alot of feints and stalls with as little as 5 kicks executed
during the first round. No one with a clean kick was recognized. This put the fight into the 2nd round, as the coach figured
Shaina's opponent strategy, he called out the opponents weakness, as Shaina took the advantage and fast kicked in for the winning score.
The match ended with alot of hugs from Coach to coach and coach to player. Shaina walked away with a smile and a gold medal to be happy
about. Congratulations to the 2 Team Mooto USA captains.
Thuc "TRUCK" Tran wins overall competition, but short of 1 Gold
Ken Tamai Memorial Tournament was as expected with alot of junior competitors. The event went longer than expected and the competition was fair. Thuc was the only competitor representing Phan University Judo Team. Even though the competition was a total of 9 compeitors he had to face, the directions were simple to him. Thuc faced a Jr. from Georgia, the country, that had competed at the most recent U.S. Open. The first match was a bit difficult as the weather seemed to have affected him. The success only began to occur after he had lost his first match. His Coach had to talk to him and be aggressive to him about waking up and paying attention to the details of the match. After, he figured that he just had his warm up match, everything, then on began to fall into his lap. He faced a player from New York, and simply counter threw his opponent and applied a tsuri nage. His competition was fierce, then facing an athlete that is partial blind (Very good Grappler) and finished his opponent with a yoko otoshi. Another competitor from New York had the adrenalin pumping as you can see on the side he was smacking his own face, just to get ready for his fight. Thuc simply applied the rule of what Judo was about and implemented moroto seio nage, then another opponent from the same team he held down for the waza ari after throwing him into osae komi. Otherwise, the tournament went well for him with a success of 1 gold and 1 silver. Not bad for a US Team member. But, in due time his rusty play will soon come back to position himself for a better result.
